This BIOS update is a bundle of updates to multiple embedded components in the system. Not all of them use the same version number.

You can check your current BIOS version following the steps here to determine if you are on the latest release.

Framework firmware is published to LVFS and updates via fwupd, which ships by default on most modern distributions.

  1. Download the Framework Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel® Core™ BIOS 3.09 Windows Installer.

  2. Ensure your system is plugged into power and your battery is charged.

  3. Extract the contents of the zip.
  4. Run the following updates in sequence. After each file is run your system will automatically restart.

    1. Framework_Laptop_12_13th_Gen_Intel_Core_BIOS_3.08_Step1.exe
    2. Framework_Laptop_12_13th_Gen_Intel_Core_BIOS_3.09_Step2.exe
  5. Wait for the firmware progress bar to complete — the system will reboot automatically. Do not interrupt.

  6. Download and install the Windows Driver Bundle v1.03 for your system if you are currently using a previous Driver Bundle release, or you are installing the Driver Bundle for the first time.

  1. Download the EFI Shell Update v3.09.

  2. Extract contents of zip folder to a FAT32 formatted USB drive. Cleanly unmount the drive before physically removing it, otherwise the BIOS update may not function correctly.

  3. Attach a charger to your device while updating.
  4. Boot your system while pressing F12 and boot from the thumb drive.

  5. Let startup.nsh run automatically to update to 3.08. The system will reboot several times and apply CSME update.

  6. Once updated to 3.08, boot your system while pressing F12 and boot from the thumb drive again.

  7. Let startup.nsh run automatically to update to 3.09.

At the end of POST, the BIOS hands control off to your operating system. Crisis Recovery is a special alternative mode: instead of booting an OS, the BIOS looks for a firmware update file and re-flashes itself.

Crisis Recovery allows the system to repair its own firmware after a failed or corrupted BIOS flash, for example if a BIOS update was interrupted by a power loss and the machine no longer boots normally.

On a working system:

  1. Insert the USB flash drive and format it as FAT32. (This erases the drive)
  2. On the drive, create the folder path \EFI\FWK (an EFI folder, and inside it an FWK folder).
  3. Download the EFI Shell Update (BIOS v3.09) and locate the CAP file.
  4. Rename the recovery file to Framework_Laptop_12_13th_Gen_Intel_Core_RECOVERY.fd and copy it into the \EFI\FWK folder.

  5. Safely eject the drive.

On a target system:

  1. Power off the affected system completely.
  2. Insert the prepared recovery drive into a USB port on the affected system.
  3. Power on the system. If the BIOS is corrupted it will enter recovery automatically at power-on.
  4. Wait for the update to complete and the system to restart. The system should then boot to the operating system normally.

Please note that we do not currently have a SLA for responding to issues on github, but we will be reviewing them through the bios release process, and will review them for future updates as well.
