Installation

Caution

To update to version 3.06, the system’s current BIOS must be version 3.04 or newer. Please verify that you are on version 3.04 or newer before proceeding. Due to changes in the CSME data structures, it is not possible to downgrade the BIOS from 3.05 once updated. If you have not yet updated to 3.04, please follow the instructions HERE.

You can check your current BIOS version following the steps here to determine if you are on the latest release.

Note

You must update with a charger attached.

Linux

Framework firmware is published to LVFS and updates via fwupd, which ships by default on most modern distributions.

fwupdmgr refresh --force
fwupdmgr get-updates
fwupdmgr update

Caution

LVFS may not update if the battery is at 100%.
If you experience issues, discharge to 95%, plug AC back in, then re-run fwupdmgr update.

Windows

1. Download the Framework Laptop 13 Intel Core Ultra Series 1 BIOS 3.06 Windows Installer.
2. Run the .exe and click "Yes" when prompted to reboot.
3. Wait for the firmware progress bar to complete — the system will reboot automatically. Do not interrupt.
4. Download and install the Windows Driver Bundle v1.04 for your system if you are currently using a previous Driver Bundle release, or you are installing the Driver Bundle for the first time.

Windows Retimer Updates

Updating the retimer will update to a signed retimer firmware that is Thunderbolt certified. There is no change to port functionality if you do not choose to update your retimer firmware. To perform the retimer update, you will need to follow the instructions twice using the following executable files, as there are two sets of retimers on the system, and each pair needs to be updated separately.

Installation

Note

Please note that you must update with a charger attached.

1. Update the BIOS first.
2. Boot into Windows after BIOS update.

3. Run the .exe and wait for the firmware update tool to stage the update.

4. After initialization, the system will restart and update the retimer firmware.

5. Repeat step 3 after rebooting to update the second set of retimers.

If you experience an issue with the update that is related to your system firmware, please post as complete a description as you can, including relevant system information and external peripherals. Please note that we do not currently have a SLA for responding to issues on github, but we will be reviewing them through the bios release process, and will review them for future updates as well.
